At first glance, a torch and a lamp may look very similar. Significant differences, however, make the two different styles of lamps in their lighting applications. Extend the life of old torchiere floor lamp and save money by rewiring yourself. Replace old or frayed wire and the old socket with modern materials to meet modern standards of electrical safety. A torch directs light upwards, which is then reflected in the roof to provide soft, indirect light.

Although both the torchiere floor lamp down illuminating provide ambient light, the torch is not effective in providing dazzling, soft lighting for entertaining and watching television. Direct light provided by lamps that direct the light downward, is more effective and task-lighting.
